New insights into the antimicrobial mechanisms of copper touch surfaces

چکیده
Introduction / objectives Survival of pathogens on touch surfaces contributes to increasing incidence and spread of antibiotic resistance and infection in hospitals. One way to address this could be to use biocidal surfaces in conjunction with improved cleaning regimes. Exposure to moist copper alloy surfaces, to simulate fomite contamination, resulted in a rapid kill of significant bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens. We now report studies on dry surfaces with a range of pathogens to elucidate the antimicrobial mechanism.

Metallic copper as an antimicrobial surface.
Bacteria, yeasts, and viruses are rapidly killed on metallic copper surfaces, and the term "contact killing" has been coined for this process. While the phenomenon was already known in ancient times, it is currently receiving renewed attention. This is due to the potential use of copper as an antibacterial material in health care settings. Contact killing was observed to take place at a rate of...
متن کامل“Life-like” assessment of antimicrobial surfaces by a new touch transfer assay displays strong superiority of a copper alloy compared to silver containing surfaces
Transmission of bacteria from inanimate surfaces in healthcare associated environments is an important source of hospital acquired infections. A number of commercially available medical devices promise to fulfill antibacterial activity to reduce environmental contamination. In this study we developed a touch transfer assay modeling fingerprint transmission to investigate the antibacterial activ...

Background: Chlamydia (C.) trachomatis is an obligate intracellular gram-negative pathogen affecting over 600 million people worldwide with 92 million new cases occurring globally each year. Genital C. trachomatis infection has been recognized as the most common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease leading to severe tubal damage, ectopic pregnancy, hydrosalpinx and infertility. However, the mec...
متن کاملA demonstration of the antimicrobial effectiveness of various copper surfaces
BACKGROUND Bacterial contamination on touch surfaces results in increased risk of infection. In the last few decades, work has been done on the antimicrobial properties of copper and its alloys against a range of micro-organisms threatening public health in food processing, healthcare and air conditioning applications; however, an optimum copper method of surface deposition and mass structure h...
متن کاملNew insights into the prevention and treatment strategies for hypertrophic scars and keloids
Hypertrophic scars and keloids are fibrosis abnormalities associated with the accumulation of collagen and extra cellular matrix components. These scars are caused by abnormal wound healing, which may occur after skin injuries caused by surgery, trauma, burns, etc. and may have a large impact on the patients’ quality of life. Hypertrophic scars and colloids in addition to aesthetic problems can...
